Brazil: 3 Antioxidants Fight Dull, Tired Skin
Beauty experts point to three key antioxidants that can help revive dull, tired skin, offering a path to a more radiant complexion without relying solely on topical products.
As the weather changes and schedules become busier, skin often loses its glow. Dry air, lack of moisture, and increased sensitivity can leave the complexion looking lackluster. While thick creams and calming lotions provide relief on the surface, increasing antioxidant intake supports the skin from within. Antioxidants fight free radicals, calm inflammation, and improve the overall appearance of the skin.
The first recommended pair is vitamin C and vitamin E. These vitamins are known for their role in collagen production. Vitamin C helps the skin’s fibroblasts synthesize collagen, while vitamin E protects against collagen cross-linking, a process that makes collagen hard and stiff and contributes to skin aging. For those dealing with tired, sagging, or aging skin, adding these two ingredients to a routine is advised. They work together to enhance each other’s effects. Studies show that vitamin E can increase vitamin C’s effectiveness by eight times, and vitamin C helps regenerate vitamin E after it neutralizes free radicals. Together, they reduce oxidative stress on cell membranes. Individually, both are powerful antioxidants that reduce free radical damage and ease inflammation. Vitamin C has been shown to improve skin tone by reducing hyperpigmentation, brightening the complexion, decreasing moisture loss, and fighting damage caused by UV exposure.
The second antioxidant is astaxanthin, sometimes called the “King of the Carotenoids.” This nutrient is found in red algae and marine life such as salmon and crabs. While it appears in skin care products, research suggests it works best as a supplement. One study found that astaxanthin improved skin wrinkles, reduced age spot size, and improved skin texture. In a double-blind clinical trial, participants reported better moisture levels, especially around the eyes, along with improved elasticity and skin tone. Another double-blind study found that it helped the skin retain water, which improved moisture and radiance.
The third ingredient is blood orange extract. This superfood extract is less known but is gaining attention due to new research. A randomized, double-blind, controlled study found that participants who took 100 milligrams daily saw a significant increase in skin radiance. The improvement was 9.2 percent after 14 days and 18.5 percent after 56 days. The same study also found that the extract helped with wrinkle depth. Researchers measured the participants’ deepest wrinkles before, during, and after supplementation. They found that wrinkle depth decreased by 6.9 percent by the end of the study.
Increasing antioxidant intake is a direct way to address skin dullness. These free-radical fighters help improve skin from the inside out, allowing the complexion to glow. While it is beneficial to get a variety of antioxidants from food, supplementing with these specific options may be effective for those who cannot get enough through diet alone.
