Brazil Study Finds This Drink Boosts Neural Health and Longevity

Drinking green tea regularly may help protect the brain as people age, according to a recent large-scale study. Researchers found that people who drank green tea daily had fewer white matter lesions in the brain, a change linked to cognitive decline, Alzheimer’s disease, and vascular dementia.

The study analyzed more than 8,700 adults without dementia. Adults who drank about three cups of green tea daily had roughly 3% fewer white matter lesions than those who drank less than one cup. Drinking six cups daily was linked to a 6% reduction. Coffee did not show similar effects on white matter, hippocampal volume, or total brain size.

Green tea contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). These compounds help protect brain cells, reduce vascular damage, and support neural health. As people age, white matter lesions tend to accumulate in the brain. These lesions affect communication between brain regions and are influenced by genetics, vascular health, and lifestyle habits.

The study suggests that adding green tea to a daily routine could help preserve cognitive function. Drinking three to six cups daily mirrored the protective levels seen in the research. Unsweetened or lightly brewed green tea maximizes antioxidant intake.

Pairing green tea with other healthy habits may amplify its benefits. Regular movement, quality sleep, and nutrient-dense meals rich in omega-3s, colorful produce, and lean proteins can support brain health. These small daily rituals may add up to lasting protection for the brain over time.
